The Plethodontidae are the world's largest group of salamanders, consisting of approximately 27 genera and 320 species. The salamander fauna of Baja California contains three genera: Aneides, Batrachoseps, and Ensatina. This chapter discusses the identification, distribution, taxonomy, natural history, and geographic variation of four major species of salamanders in Baja California: Aneides lugubris (Arboreal Salamander), Batrachoseps major (Garden Slender Salamander), Ensatina eschscholtzii (Monterey Ensantina), and Ensatina klauberi (Large-Blotched Ensantina).
