The worm lizards belong to a large group called Amphisbaenia, comprising of 24 genera and over 143 species. The worm lizards of Baja California belong to the family Bipedidae and are represented by a single endemic species of bipedid: Bipes biporus (Five-Toed Worm Lizard). Bipes biporus can be distinguished from all other lizards by having forelimbs and lacking hind limbs. All other amphisbaenians are limbless.
