This introductory chapter explains the theme of this volume, which is about the impact of therapeutic discourse on the notions of identity. The analysis of the therapeutic discourse is carried out from the vantage point of the sociology of culture. This book examines the way the language of therapy has reformulated the deepest level of identity symbols and explains that the most radical and probably the most influential critique of the therapeutic discourse has been inspired by Michel Foucault's historicization of systems of knowledge.
