The problems that California faces require not only building census about how to respond, but also the empowerment of the state's political institutions and government representatives to carry the whole situation. This chapter explores the dimensions of political disengagement and distrust. Topics include the following: (1) voter turnout; (2) interest in politics; (3) political information seeking; (4) attitudes toward the federal and state government; (5) attitudes toward governmental intervention in people's lives; and (6) how disengagement and distrust affected 1998 voting decisions. California is also compared with the United States in an effort to determine if the state is unique or representative of national trends.
