This chapter attempts to locate Aintab and its court both in terms of its place and in the passage of time. It investigates whether Aintab's conquest in 1516 was a rupture in the lives of the province's inhabitants, and analyzes what the conquest meant for people's sense of identity and also for their well-being. The records of the Aintab court in 1540–1541 suggest that the local population developed a flexible but tough-minded approach to dealing with the most recent of regimes to claim sovereignty over the city.
