This introductory chapter discusses the most deeply affected victims in Madagascar, namely the marginalized coastal youth. It first describes the nation of Madagascar and the town of Ambanja, which is located in the Sambirano Valley. It then provides a general overview of the political history of the island and a description of anthropological models of childhood and their limitations. Finally, it reviews the methodological approaches used throughout the research with school youth.
