This chapter studies several ancient commentaries of Demosthenes that have survived. It describes these commentaries as particularly volatile and subject to different types of reorganization and excerpting. A section on the relationship between the ancient commentaries and the Byzantine scholia to Demosthenes is included. The chapter also assumes that generations of scholars commented their different interests and needs, their various assumptions about their audiences, and their own unique ways of asking and answering questions about Demosthenes' text.
