This chapter examines the history of commercial publishing in Sibao, an important regional publishing center in China active from the late seventeenth through the early twentieth century. It suggests that Sibao entrepreneurs provide a case study of the two interrelated trends in Qing publishing discussed in the first chapter. These are the expansion of publishing sites to hinterland areas of southern China, and the development of important publishing concerns at the lower levels of the hierarchy of central places.
