This chapter examines different types of political economy in order to explain the differences among market-oriented rich democracies and the occasional areas of divergence. It delineates three types of national bargaining arrangements among major interest groups and government, including democratic corporatism, corporatism-without-labor, and least-consensual democracies. It address the argument that in the last two decades democratic corporatism has collapsed or eroded, that globalization sounds its doom. The chapter presents data that show the ideological and structural roots of these consensual political economies.
