This chapter provides a historical overview of Taiwan that includes plains Aborigines from the early seventeenth century through the end of the twentieth century, presenting background information of what is reliably known about plains Aborigines and examining the new narratives of the unfolding of Taiwanese identity. It investigates why the plains Aborigines disappeared from historical records and suggests that the disappearance was the result of the inclusion of the Aborigines in the Hoklo Taiwanese category.
