This chapter analyzes the ideological terms of debate as well as actual experiences in order to provide a better understanding of identity change in Taiwan and China. It explains that both of these factors influence the choices and actions of people and governments, and uses theory to discuss the real-world political implications of the new Taiwanese identity for Taiwan's future relations with the People's Republic of China. The analysis reveals that the closer ideologies are to actual identities, the more effective they are in motivating people.
