This chapter describes the ancient Collasuyu, one of the oldest provinces of the Inca state, and probably the richest. Vast expanses of the Collasuyu grasslands supported millions of llamas and alpacas. It was also a rich agricultural area and silver can be mined in the highlands. Collasuyu was later converted into the sprawling and productive province of Tawantinsuyu, the original name of the Inca empire and by 1532 the region had been carved up into a series of provinces.
