This chapter examines the impact of the Battle of Shanghai on Chinese capitalists. This battle began on August 13, 1937 and within days the neighborhood was essentially levelled. It dealt a crippling blow to the Chinese capitalists of the lower Yangzi, and though the results were uneven, the level of destruction was extraordinary. Even for those businessmen lucky enough to survive the battle with little damage, market conditions were not favorable when the fighting stopped.
