This chapter examines the war experiences of individual firms in China during the Sino-Japanese war. It discusses the ambiguities of the war experience and suggests that the capitalists of the Shanghai area had an ambiguous relationship with Chinese nationalism. The chapter argues that the responses to and the actions of Chinese capitalists during the war were influenced by the types of businesses operated, the style of business activity, and the organizational structures of the firms. It concludes that very few Chinese businessmen during the war fit neatly into the heroic nationalist narrative currently touted in Chinese historical writing.
