This chapter examines Dai Li's secret service communication training group and his attempts to break Japan's war codes. It discusses the role of Wei Daming and American cryptologist Herbert Yardley in breaking the Japanese codes. It highlights Yardley's influence in the Juntong's use of truth serums scopolamine and sodium amobarbital and the creation of a centralized cryptographic center called the Office of Special Technological Research (OSTR). It suggests that Yardley's work with the Chinese paved the way for the creation of the Sino-American Cooperative Organization (SACO).
