This introductory chapter explains the theme of this volume, which is about the medieval music and the art of memorializing musical materials. The main body of the book is divided into two parts. The first explains how medieval musicians established their memorial archive and the second explains how composers used this archive in the compositional process. The memorial archive of the medieval musician had three components: chant, elementary music theory, and counterpoint.
