The five chapters in this section focus on highly varied topics such as the limits of rational choice, religion, trust, types of exchange, and higher education. However varied they are, all directly reflect six lessons learned from Neil Smelser as a teacher and scholar. The first three chapters of this section deal with rational choice which is a central theme to Neil Smelser's work, from his first book, Economy and Society, to his 1997 presidential address on ambivalence. The last two chapters discuss trust within the paradigm of social structure and differentiation and competition in the academic sector of the society.
