This book addresses the perceptions of manhood as they are recorded in the works of Athenian orators. Manhood concerns primarily the privileged citizens of the city, as they fulfilled the exclusively male roles of political leaders and followers, soldiers, lovers, heads of households, kinsmen, chief guardians of communal morals, and other functions. It also discusses the concepts of masculinity presented in the orators, and improves the understanding of the orations through an exploration of the rhetoric of manhood. The corpus of the “The Attic Orators” includes orations delivered in person or given to others to deliver, often in court and for a fee. The focus is on rhetorical depictions of men and how they affect the understanding of Athenian manhood.
