Saurischia is a stem-based clade defined as all dinosaurs more closely related to Allosaurus than to Stegosaurus. This chapter discusses the oldest known dinosaurs, which includes the basal saurischians, as well as various forms of uncertain affinity once assigned to the group. It examines the anatomy of basal saurischians such as Herrerasaurus ischigualastensis, Eoraptor lunensis, Staurikosaurus pricei and Guaibasaurus candelariensis. The chapter also presents a phylogenetic study of early dinosaur evolution based on the cladistic analysis of 107 anatomical characters, most of which were gathered from previous cladistic studies of Dinosauria.

Keywords: Saurischia; Herrerasaurus ischigualastensis; Eoraptor lunensis; Staurikosaurus pricei; Guaibasaurus candelariensis; evolution; cladistic analysis; Dinosauria
