This chapter describes the account of postwar policy swings in 1927, when the logic of restoring the gold standard led to a great banking crisis. Takahashi Korekiyo and Inoue Junnosuke jointly presided over the cleanup. Subsequently, as other countries returned to the gold standard, international pressure to follow suit came to bear on Japan.
