This chapter considers Daisaku Ikeda as the rising star of the Soka Gakkai during the presidency of Josei Toda. It explains that Ikeda formally joined Gakkai in August 1947 and soon took charge of practical matters for Toda ranging from editorial assignments to cleaning up the financial mess. The two soon forged a mentor-disciple relationship that was also an intimate friendship. During his short presidency, Toda was able to build the Gakkai into the largest and most influential religious movements in Japan. Ikeda assumed office in May 1960.
