This chapter consists mainly of an update of the distributional analysis of California coastal fishes completed more than 25 years ago. The current analysis incorporates range extensions and recent additions of species to the fauna. Given that surface water temperatures generally have warmed in the northeastern Pacific over the last 25 years, that most of the period (1976–1998) lay within a warm regime cycle, and that three strong El Niño events occurred during the interval, this chapter expects that the analysis will reflect the known additions to the fauna and perhaps to detect some northward range shifts in the fauna as a whole.
