The Center for the Adolescents of San Miguel de Allende (CASA), in the state of Guanajuato, central Mexico, has developed both birth and midwifery education models with concrete practicality and a judicious combination of science and caring. The CASA program began by offering contraceptives and family planning services provided through peer counseling programs. Its campus provides a range of reproductive health care services, as well as dental, pharmacy, and laboratory services. The CASA students and midwives recognized that errors and differences of opinion could occur with any health practitioner, and that the transfer of biomedical knowledge can result in a sense of diminishment as traditional practitioners come to see their practices as incorrect. The students' recognition of the ethical principles underlying both biomedical and traditional knowledge systems is a further step in resolving this dilemma. This model is achieving replication, and its many supporters hope to spread it throughout Central America and beyond.
