This chapter notes that for no other contemporary opera are the surviving sources so numerous, so varied, and so complex as those of Monteverdi's. In part because of their unusual profusion, the sources for all three of these operas are particularly difficult to reconcile with one another; reconciliation in each instance requires hypotheses regarding function and chronology. The chapter examines the librettos for Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria, Le nozze d'Enea e Lavinia, and L'incoronazione di Poppea.
