This chapter goes inside a big band, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra (VJO), to experience musicianship from the vantage point of each chair. The traditions of the VJO, the longest-lived contemporary New York big band, began in the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra and have continued to evolve over four decades of performances. Members and their substitutes constitute a formidable network of musicians, active in a large number of New York bands, as well as the Broadway theater and recording industries.
