In this chapter about same-sex relationships, the author recalls how a beautiful relationship began between her and a woman named Wanda while she was in prison. She had put an ad in the paper for a pen pal that read “Middle-aged woman seeks romantic friendship with person not currently incarcerated. All races welcome.” Wanda, a twenty-three-year-old sociology graduate at the time, had responded. She was from Michigan, and the only one to respond to the author's ad. Wanda wrote to her and her letters had an effect on the author. Wanda decided to visit her in prison. That was three years previous to this chapter being written, and Wanda came to visit her whenever she could. They talked about getting together when the author got out of prison. When the author finally got her freedom, she came to Michigan went to live with Wanda.
