This chapter introduces the attitudes of the Gentiles towards the Jews. It first identifies the twelve authors whose fragments and testimonia are studied in later chapters, and then notes that only a few Greek writings on the Jews during the Hellenistic age survived. The chapter looks at the different attempts to explain or interpret the development of the positions of Greek Hellenistic authors about the Jews, and provides a note on the evidence, style, and methodology used in this book.
