The larvae of most unionoids are parasitic on fish, so it is reasonable to suspect that the distribution and abundance of host fish might be an important factor in limiting unionoid populations. This chapter discusses patterns of fish-host use, host species, and host limitation in nature. Simple epidemiological models of mussel-fish dynamics are also presented.

Keywords: host fish; unionoid populations; mussel-fish dynamics; epidemiological models
