This chapter examines how opponents of the Tour de France during this period destabilized representations of racers as model workers, describing them instead as slave laborers. It notes that these commentators exploited the Tour's much-celebrated extreme nature to formulate a broad critique of the exploitation of labor which, they argued, described the increasingly rationalized factories of early twentieth-century France.
