This chapter examines how a group of religious Americans developed new discourses of spiritual progress built on insights gleaned from new psychologies such as phrenology. Beginning in this period, a broad coalition of religious liberals used these new psychologies to find in external, especially bodily, conditions signs of inner spiritual states.
