The postwar years up to 1960 were a period of stagnation in the history of historiography which is a best kind of preparatory period. Hans-Ulrich Wehler speaks explicitly of “peculiar 15 year incubation period” perceived as merely a pre or post history. As a consequence, the historiography of the 1950s was scarcely mentioned in the literature. Histories of the discipline emphasized the historian historiography prior to the First World War.
