This chapter examines how individual soldiers in Japan navigate their militarized masculinity in conjunction with a set of contradictions linked with the notion of the “normal state”. It discusses how individual soldiers in their everyday lives negotiate the contradictory messages of the “normal” while attempting to personify “real” soldierhood and manhood. It also discusses how these men deal with the tensions between the combat training they receive and the risk they are required to take in order to save the lives of others.
