This chapter analyzes the gendering of “real” humanoid robots designed to coexist and interact with human beings in the home and in the workplace. Among the questions tackled in this chapter are: how do robots embody notions of the relationship in humans between sex, gender, and sexuality, and how do roboticists design and attribute the male or female gender of humanoid robots? This chapter also shows that gendering of robots draws from the domain of gendering practices dependent upon color, shape, function, and sociolonguistic convention.
