In this chapter, Clark Terry describes the experience of two of his dreams coming true. Clark and Pauline decided to marry each other and at the same time, Clark got a call from Count Basie to join his band in Detroit. As Clark describes, Basie was an exceptional musician and leader. His feel of time and the way he articulated was totally original and very effective. With a few basic chords, during which the bass walked, his sound permeated the entire band. Playing with Basie, Clark felt and heard the music better than he ever had before. The only problem that worried everybody on the band was that Basie loved betting on horses and he ran up huge gambling debts.
