It was in 1991 that Clark's backache became unbearable. He was struggling, but kept going. Apart from concert gigs, he did several recordings. After several days of tests, he ended up in spinal stenosis surgery. What he missed the most was jazz. His only fear was never to be able to play or teach jazz again. His gigs were cancelled and he wasn't playing at concerts. Clark was devastated. Of all the things, he regretted not being able to teach his students the most. It was his wife, Gwen, who left no stone unturned to bring back Clark on his feet. After much therapy and exercise, Clark began walking again. While getting better, Clark learned that his friend, Miles had died. This was another storm to bear for Clark.
