This chapter presents the text of Michael Frede's speech concerning Origen and the early Christian view on the notion of free will. It explains that while Tatian was the first person ever to use the expression “the freedom of the will”, Origen also played an important role in developing the concept of free will. Origen had a lot to say about freedom and the free will and he even had a small treatise on the subject, as part of his great and ambitious work De principiis.
