This chapter examines the impact on the eastern Brazilian Shield on fish species. It focuses only on patterns associated with strictly freshwater fishes that regularly occur in fresh streams. It reviews historical biogeographic evidence associated with general distribution patterns of the fish fauna occurring on both sides of these mountain chains and suggests that the geologic evolution of the chain of high mountains associated with the eastern limits of the Brazilian Shield provided an opportunity for the vicariance and isolation of fish species.
