This chapter provides a biogeographic survey of Andean freshwater fishes and a compilation of the species. It explains the use of multivariate methods of classification and trhe parsimony analysis of endemicity to describe the major patterns of faunal similarity among Andean drainage basins. It compares the results with similar patterns involving the lowland Neotropical ichthyofauna in order to examine whether different historical processes might apply in the evolutionary divergence of the highland versus the lowland ichthyofaunas.

Keywords: Andean freshwater fishes; multivariate methods; parsimony analysis; endemicity; faunal similarity; Andean drainage basins; Neotropical ichthyofauna
