This concluding chapter reconsiders the links connecting music, politics, and identity in light of the changing political culture of the later 1970s and early 1980s. With the socialists' electoral victory in 1981, there was a sense that many of the aspirations of May '68 might be realized at last. But this hope was offset by the sense that the socialists' victory foreclosed the utopian dreams that May had kindled, dreams in which the identifications and symbolic investments afforded by music had played a key role.
