Current knowledge about the atmospheric chemistry and biogeochemistry of environmental mercury is summarized and analyzed. The global budget of mercury is described, including emission and deposition processes. Oxidation and reduction of mercury in the atmosphere and associated uncertainties are discussed. Global models of mercury fate and transport are introduced. Future challenges for atmospheric mercury identified in this chapter include reducing uncertainties in the global budget, understanding atmospheric redox reactions, and integrating models for policy applications.
