This chapter first sets out the book's purpose, which is to explore some of the variations on the interplay between being a part of and being apart from the world. As such, it builds upon the author's previous existential analyses of elementary forms of intersubjectivity and of the indeterminate relationship between experience and behavior or experience and belief. The chapter then discusses fieldwork as an absorbing errand, understanding the world through active engagement with it, participant observation, and our ways of representing the world to ourselves.
