After describing the main phases in Ismaili history, this chapter investigates Ismaili historiography covering the major categories of sources. Different genres of texts produced by the Ismaili 'īs, who were the scholars of the community, are covered before taking up the anti-Ismaili writings of the Sunnis and the Assassin legends fabricated by the Crusader circles. This chapter ends by evaluating the contributions of the orientalists of the 19th century and the breakthrough of modern scholarship in the field based on the recovery and study of Ismaili manuscripts since the 1930s.
