This chapter investigates the reputation of King John Balliol, showing how his defamation at the hands of English chroniclers was matched by their Scottish counterparts busily orchestrating the epiphany of Robert Bruce. Indeed, as Bruce's stature grew in the course of the nineteenth century that of Balliol suffered further traducement, though currently something of role reversal is detected.
