In central Europe during the fifth century bc, there were great social, economic, and religious changes, and their causes and circumstances emerge only in broad outline from the archaeological data. It is clear that almost all the late Hallstatt princely centres mentioned in Chapter 1 lost their importance at this time, and some of them were completely abandoned. In parallel with the decline of the old princely centres, grave deposits suggest the formation of new centres of power in what had previously been the fringes of the West Hallstatt culture. This chapter discusses the end of the Hallstatt culture, the birth of Celtic art, and aspects of early Celtic religion.
