Scottish Labour is far from being the only party in the Western world to face the challenge of reconciling class, ideology and territorial demands, while facing competition on all three dimensions. This is a dilemma of social democracy — founded as it is on a modern, integrated welfare state — that it can no longer take for granted. Yet breaking with the paradigm of the nation-state has proved difficult everywhere. This chapter discusses the historical trajectory of social democracy and social democracy in the twentieth century.
