This chapter examines the terms of the peace negotiated between Edward I and the Scots in 1304-5, finalised by the Ordinance of September 1305. Edward ensured the restoration of lands to Scottish landowners in most cases, but was implacable towards Wallace, who was captured and sent to London for execution in August 1305. A comment about Bruce's castle of Kildrummy in the Ordinance suggests Edward may already have had doubts about his loyalty; in fact, Bruce had entered into a secret ‘band’ or agreement with Lamberton to promise mutual assistance.
