The book’s concluding chapter looks forward to the picture emerging from the main strands of research in discourse analysis, as presented in the previous book chapters and suggests a number of areas which are thought of as being prominent in the field’s development. These are: the area of language and social interaction, in which conversation analysis plays a key-role; the study of language, discourse and sociocultural processes, in which ethnography of communication and linguistic anthropological approaches are pivotal; the area of cognition, which is explored by –amongst others-neurolinguistic and computational approaches; the study of literacy/literacies and the analysis of computer-mediated communication and more generally discourse & new technologies; last but not least, corpus linguistics. Although the diversity of views on discourse analysis is a sign of richness, the discussion urges for a closer integration of approaches.

Keywords: Computer-mediated communication; conversation analysis; ethnography of communication; cognition; literacy; corpus linguistics
