Culture and Ethnicity

Show Summary Details

This chapter studies the relationship between ethnicity and culture in Matthew Arnold's writings. It reconstructs his conception of ‘culture’ and examines the dangers of overemphasising the extent of Arnold's sense of alienation from the British industrial society. The chapter also notes that a relevant preoccupation in Arnold's writings was the questions relating to national and ethnic identities. It concludes that Arnold's goal was to encourage and reinforce the role of a widely defined culture, as well as the authority of the man of letters, within the life of the nation.
