This chapter considers the relationship between dictionaries and linguistic atlases, particularly in a historical context. The focus is on the Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue and the Linguistic Atlas of Older Scots (LAOS). The LAOS is one of two historical linguistic atlases being prepared at the Institute for Historical Dialectology, University of Edinburgh. The other is A Linguistic Atlas of Early Middle English (LAEME). The chapter begins by describing the aims, objectives, and methodologies of LAOS, which are also mutatis mutandis those of LAEME. These are compared to the aims, objectives and methodologies of the historical lexicographer. The chapter suggests ways in which the historical lexicographer and dialectologist can inform each other.
