Since both cinema and television are audio-visual mediums, it is not surprising that technology offers the most natural basis for comparison between the two. Indeed it is unarguable that the technological similarities which the two mediums share are at the centre of the economic and cultural tensions between them. The relationship between cinema and television has been affected more recently by the advent of digital technology, which brings with it the possibilities for low-cost filming, an intimate and almost artisan production mode, and a democratisation of use. Nonetheless, the digital film-making ‘revolution’ would not have been possible without the already-established television-bound culture of consuming and producing audio-visual material.
